Freelance development payment question and suggestions??
I am preparing to have a software application developed offshore in India, but have a concern about the advanced payment required by the company. The cost of the software is $7,000 with 30% due at contract signing and 10% due after each milestone is reached (7 milestones). This is my first time working with this company and the references came back positive. A contract is being drawn up, but don't know how easy it is to enforce in India. The way the developer has the payments set up, 50% of the payments will occur before one of the two major modules are developed. Would it be fair to the developer to ask for the following schedule?
30% placed in escrow on signing
10% milestone 1 & same for 2
10% plus 50% of escrowed amount due on milestone 3 (major milestone)
10% plus 50% of escrowed amount due on milestone 4 (major milestone)
10% each milestone after that.
Any other suggestions that would satisfy a developer and ensure that he doesn't disappear with my money?

What are the best programming languages/platforms for FREELANCE INDIE game programmers to know OTHER THAN C++?
PLEASE READ THE WHOLE QUESTION.
I know that C++ is the standard in large companies that make full-fledged PC games and games for major consoles like the PS3, the Wii, and the XBOX 360.
However, I'm interested in small-time, indie freelance development.
In other words, I'm hoping to do most of the programming and game design myself and buy artwork and music to use in my games fairly cheaply from local artists (I live in Taiwan where I can acquire assets for half the price I would have to pay in the US).
I'm just wondering what the best programming languages are for a SMALL-TIME, INDIE, FREELANCE programmer.
This may not be C++.
Just to clarify, I already know the core C++ language (did just fine in a college course on Microsoft Visual C++ programming), I did just fine on the midterm for my Win32 programming course, and I've written a small graphical role-playing game (finished) in Borland C++ 5.5 that includes a buffer, saving/loading, pre-rendered scenes, tiles, a battle system and movement engine, etc.
However, what OTHER languages are important for game development, especially low-end platforms like cell phones, PocketPCs, small Web games, that kind of thing?

Questions about freelance custom software development...?
Hey guys,
I'm considering, for the sake of making some side profit, taking up some freelance development jobs. I can do a wide variety of things; everything from business software, tools/utilities, libraries and APIs, games and graphics applications, even operating system kits and bootloaders. I'm fluent in C, C++, C# and Intel x86/64 assembly language. So I know what I'm doing as far as design and implementation (the planning and code-writing part), but how to manage this little freelance thing is a question for me...
I'm wondering, what should I charge for particular things? What sort of services do you think I should offer, and which should I not? How would you manage things if you were going to do this? Would you want pay by time, the task or just a flat-rate? How much? Generally, I'm wanting to know what other people are doing/have done and how this little side business thing works. I really only have experience with mass market consumer projects and licensing my own work out to private entities and individuals. Spare no details! Thanks!
