How to Choose the Right Shopping Cart Software for Your Business

Your virtual storefront should offer all the convenience that a physical store offers its customers. To make it easy for your customers to shop in your site, make sure that provide them with a tool that will allow them to "carry" the items that they choose while browsing through your other products. A shopping cart is just what you need to enhance your eCommerce site.

If you've been to a virtual store you may have noticed a shopping cart or a shopping basket icon at the top of the page that shows the list of products. This is the shopping cart software. What it does is very important as it allows customers to conveniently select the items that they intend to buy and stack them somewhere until they decide to checkout.

The concept of the shopping cart software is just the same as the shopping cart in a supermarket. Customers can just toss in whatever they want, take out items that they decide not to buy, and keep a running balance of all the items before they go to the checkout page.

If you want to have a shopping cart feature in your virtual store, then you need to have the software that will allow you to do so. As you start to try looking for one, you will discover that there are a lot of shopping cart software packages that are available in the market.

Why get a shopping cart software?

Before you make a decision on which shopping cart software to buy, make sure that you know what you need for your site. Incorporating a shopping cart feature in your site is more than just putting up the shopping cart icon. A lot of people think that it doesn't matter which software they buy since they all do the same thing. Just so you will get the best value for your money, here are some suggestions:

- Choose a package that will be very easy to install. It should have an install wizard that will guide you through each step of the process with help options available just in case something goes wrong. It is possible to put in shopping carts in sites that had no virtual stores before.

- Since you want to sell as much products as you can, you definitely want customers to find your site easily. So choose a package that is optimized for search engines. Make sure that you use frequently used keywords when describing your products. Customers should be able to view the photos of your products as either thumbnails or large images.

- The shopping carts in your site don't have to all look the same. There are software packages that allow you to customize the look of your shopping carts and your site. They usually allow you to include features such as pull down menus or buttons that allow customers to easily navigate throughout a site.

Prices for shopping cart software packages range from $100 to more than $1, 000. If you're just starting your business, it would be wise to buy a package that is just within your budget.

Aside from the features mentioned above, a shopping cart software package can also make your site more efficient by: helping you create and input coupon codes, managing your inventory, keeping a customer's address book, creating reports, and tracking shipments.

It can also provide with you with other services such as web hosting, setting up of a merchant account and a payment gateway, and establishing a secure payment network.

Before making a purchase, make sure that you do your research and choose the one that can meet your needs and requirements.
